Know Thyself 2010-2011
Through the "Know Thyself" photography project, students were challenged to capture images of themselves that were reflective and did not reveal their faces. By doing this, student were challenged to analytically inquire about ways they could represent themselves without visually revealing their faces in photographs. When working on the "Know Thyself" project for the second year in a row, I was excited and up for the challenge. Through this photography challenge, I was not only able to learn about my inner thoughts and how my thought process works, but I was also able to find intellectual and clever ways to represent myself through mirrors, shadows, reflections, foggy mirrors, and many more.
Along with capturing images that were reflective, we were challenged to take images that reflected/conveyed a message of anger, isolation, or depression. Through these images, I focused on capturing these emotions in non-obvious ways. For example, I didn't aim towards capturing a picture of someone who looks sad. I approached the challenge in an intellectual way.
After capturing images, we were told to choose images that were taken by ourselves and collage them into a massive collage using Adobe Photoshop (CS5). Although the students of Art Club did a collage during the 2009-2010 school year, I did not complete the collage that year, therefore I took pictures from that year and put them into the collage from the 2010-2011 school year. Through my collage, I aimed to choose pictures that I believed were most representational of myself, and went along with my "story" that I wrote to go with the collage.
